Dr. A.C. Shanmugam Honored with Prestigious Doctorate by Mysore University
Renowned educationist and healthcare provider, Dr. A.C. Shanmugam, was conferred with an honorary doctorate by Mysore University in recognition of his exceptional contributions to education and medical services. The prestigious award was presented during the 105th Graduation ceremony at the university on 18th January, 2025.
A proud law graduate of Bangalore University, Dr. Shanmugamchose the state of Karnataka and its people, making it his “karma bhoomi.” His journey of service began in 1992 with the establishment of the RajaRajeswari Dental College Hospital, followed by the founding of the RajaRajeswari Medical College & Hospital. His vision was to bring affordable medical services to the poor and underserved communities.
Dr. Shanmugam’s commitment to education and healthcare has led him to open more than 10 institutions across Karnataka, including medical colleges, nursing colleges, allied health sciences colleges, engineering colleges, and schools. His latest venture, the Chamundeshwari Medical College, Hospital, and Research Institute at Channapatna, has provided much-needed healthcare services to the rural communities in Mandya, Mysore, and Ramanagara.
In addition to providing education to over 60,000 students across all 30 of his institutions, Dr. Shanmugam has also created employment opportunities for more than 12,000 employees, greatly contributing to the state’s development. His philanthropic efforts extend to healthcare as well, with regular free medical services, including more than 1, 50,000 free surgeries, medication, and monthly health camps conducted in rural areas.
Dr. Shanmugam’s efforts have earned him several internationally recognized honours, including:
- Honorary Fellowship (FRCPS) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, UK.
- Honorary Professorship – Doctor of Science from Kursk State Medical University, Russia.
- Fellowship from the International Medical Sciences Academy, UAE.
Now, he has joined an esteemed group of honourees with the prestigious honorary doctorate from Mysore University.
The 105th Graduation ceremony at Mysore University’s Crawford Hall marked a momentous occasion as Dr. Shanmugam was honoured with the doctorate. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Shanmugam expressed immense pride in receiving this recognition from Mysore University, a historic institution known for being
the first of its kind in Karnataka. He described the honour as a tremendous privilege, underscoring the university’s esteemed legacy of recognizing individuals who have made significant societal contributions.
Mysore University, founded in 1916, is one of Karnataka’s most respected academic institutions and holds a special place in the state’s educational history.
In addition to Dr. Shanmugam, other distinguished individuals awarded honorary doctorates include Global CEO and MD, Shaheen Majeed, Chief Traffic Engineer Dr. Babu. K. Veeregowda.
The ceremony was a momentous occasion, marking the university’s continued legacy of honouring those who have made exceptional contributions to society.
